Cracker, at the Borderline, with [livejournal.com profile] oneplusme. They’re showing off Greenland, their first new album in a fair while.

It’s good – maybe a little slight, but also consistent and subtle. There seems like an increasing cross-pollenation from Camper Van Beethoven, Lowery’s “other” band, without going too far in that – interesting, but very different – direction.

I’m going to go ahead and say they were better than the last time I saw them, with fewer songs, more rocking and (I am assured) the very same lively Scottish fans calling out requests. They’re honour bound to play the “hits”, which is always a millstone, but they settle into the set better than they might.

Johnny did his run-through of Lonesome Johnny Blues – a damn fine version, too (even if, ‘hearing him sing “Another Song About the Rain” or “Hold of Myself” would be a refreshing change.’).

You can start anywhere with their back catalogue. The best-of Garage d’Or is a good cross-section and Greatest Hits Redux brings in a few more live favourites.
